Ben'Imana

Winner of the best first feature award at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Ben’Imana is an astounding debut from Rwandan filmmaker Marie-Clémentine Dusabejambo.

In 2012, nearly two decades after the genocide against the Tutsi, survivor Vénéranda leads her community through a painful process of justice and reconciliation, while clashing with her pregnant teenage daughter. Drawing on a decade of research and gathered testimony, Dusabejambo crafts a deeply moving, feminist exploration of the genocide’s enduring legacy and the difficulty of healing.

“Dusabejambo walks a tightrope with formidable grace in her reckoning with the legacy of genocide.” — Sophie Monks Kaufman, Little White Lies
