Nuisance Bear

Nuisance Bear is a visually stunning and unconventional nature documentary, considered from one animals’ perspective with a poetic voiceover from an indigenous Inuit elder.

Welcome to Churchill, Manitoba, where there is a burgeoning tourist trade for polar bear watching, though increasing problems are caused by climate change, preventing the bears from migrating on the ice further north. The film then shifts to neighbouring Nunavut, where indigenous people struggle to preserve their culture.

“This tension between profit and protection, between exploitation and conservation, is explored in much more depth in Vanden and Weisman’s latest feature, thanks to yet more stunning compositions and some crucial historical context provided by Inuit narrator Mike Tunalaaq Gibbons.” — Oliver Weir, The Film Stage
