Odd Man Out

Set against political unrest in Northern Ireland, Carol Reed’s gripping post-war noir stars James Mason as Johnny McQueen, a revolutionary stranded on the streets of an unnamed Belfast after a robbery goes wrong.

Wounded and hunted by police, Johnny makes his way across the city over the course of one increasingly desperate night. With cinematographer Robert Krasker, Reed transforms Belfast into a shadowy urban labyrinth, anticipating their later collaboration on The Third Man.

“Carol Reed’s first masterpiece… a stranger’s groping quest through the labyrinth of a great city.” — Imogen Sara Smith, Criterion
