The Third Man

Regarded as one of the greatest British films of all time, The Third Man is one of two Carol Reed films screening in The City Plays Itself season alongside Odd Man Out.

Set in post-war Austria in 1949, the film follows American writer Holly Martins who arrives in Vienna to visit an old friend but learns he has been killed in a street accident. The circumstances seem suspicious, and what follows is a murky and captivating thriller set among the maze-like streets and sewers of Vienna.

“Vienna in The Third Man is a more particular and unmistakable place than almost any other location in the history of the movies.” — Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
